    Nilotic means “of the Nile”: the river, the land along it, the people who have lived there, or their languages. It is a serious, word, not a tourist word. You will meet Nilotic peoples — groups such as the Dinka and the Luo in South Sudan, Uganda, and Kenya — and Nilotic languages, a group of languages spoken in that part of Africa. It is not only “Egyptian.” Egypt sits on the lower Nile, but when writers say Nilotic about people and languages, they often mean further south, upriver. You can hear Nile inside the word. Scholars do not all cut the language map in the same way, so treat “Nilotic languages” as a useful label, not a perfect box.
