The Nile is a huge river in north-east Africa. School books still call it the longest river in the world, though actually some scientists now argue that the Amazon is longer — measuring a river is messier than it sounds. Two great arms make it: the Blue Nile, which starts in Ethiopia, and the White Nile, which starts in the lakes of Uganda. They join in Sudan and run north through Egypt into the Mediterranean Sea. Almost all of Egypt’s farms drink Nile water; without it, that desert country could not grow food in the same way. Tourists still sail up and down it on large boats. When English speakers say the Nile, they mean this one river. The English name comes from the old Greek name Neîlos.
