A nightshirt is a long, loose shirt that you wear in bed. It hangs down over the thighs or knees, like a shirt that grew into a short dress. Traditionally it is what a man or boy sleeps in. It is sleepwear, not a shirt you would wear to work or school. Compare a nightie or (more of a dress, often for women) and (a matching top and trousers). Nightshirts used to be very common; today many people sleep in a T-shirt or in , so the word can feel a little old-fashioned, though you still buy them in shops. Neutral, everyday clothing vocabulary.
