A nightie is a soft, loose dress that a woman or girl wears in bed. It is the friendly short name for a : the -ie ending makes it sound small and , the way doggie does for dog. People say nightie in everyday talk, especially in British English. On a shop label you may also see , and in American English nightgown is very common for the same kind of clothes. A nightie is not (a top plus trousers) and not quite a (a long shirt, traditionally for men). Though actually, a lot of people now just say for almost anything they sleep in, so nightie can sound a little cute or old-fashioned — a grandmother’s word, or a word on a packet. It is informal. You would not put it in a serious report.
