A nightdress is one piece of clothing, like a thin dress, that a woman or girl wears in bed. It is not a dress for a party or for going out, even though it has the word dress in it. The word is especially British; American English more often says nightgown for the same thing. Some nightdresses are light cotton for hot weather; some are longer and warmer. It is one kind of . Do not mix it up with a dressing gown or , which you pull on over your sleeping clothes to answer the door.
