Neurotypical describes a person whose brain develops and works in the way most people's do — someone who is not autistic, and more broadly who does not have a condition like ADHD or dyslexia. It can also describe things rather than people: "neurotypical social rules", "a neurotypical workplace". The word is used as an adjective ("her brother is neurotypical") and quite often as a noun ("the book explains how neurotypicals read faces"); it is sometimes shortened to NT in online writing. What matters most here is where the word came from and what it is doing. It was made by autistic people themselves, in the 1990s, and it changed the shape of the sentence. Before it, you could only say "normal people", which quietly makes the other group abnormal. "Neurotypical" instead just says: typical, common, most. It is one half of a pair — the other half is "neurodivergent", and the whole picture is "neurodiversity", the idea that different kinds of brains are natural variation rather than faults to be fixed. So the polite, current way to say it is "neurotypical people", not "normal people". Be aware of two smaller things. First, the word is descriptive, not a compliment — among autistic people it is sometimes used with a light teasing edge, as in "neurotypicals never say what they actually mean". Second, it is contested at the edges: people argue about whether someone with ADHD but not autism counts, or someone with depression. Nobody has settled that.
