Neuroscience is the science of the brain and the nervous system — how it is built, how it works, and what happens when it goes wrong. It is really a group of sciences working on one thing together: biologists looking at single cells, doctors looking at patients, psychologists looking at behaviour, and now computer people building models. People who do it are called neuroscientists, and the adjective is "neuroscientific". The field is young as a named subject — it grew into its current shape from about the 1960s — and it grew fast once machines were invented that could take pictures of a living brain at work. You will hear compound names for its branches: cognitive neuroscience (thinking and memory), computational neuroscience (maths and models), social neuroscience, and so on. One thing worth knowing: because the word sounds serious and scientific, it gets used to sell things. "Neuroscience shows that…" appears in advertisements, business books and study-tip videos where the actual science is thin or has been stretched. Teachers and scientists have a slightly mocking word for that — "neurobabble" or "neuro-nonsense". So the word itself is honest; some of the people using it are not. It is an uncountable noun: say "she studies neuroscience", not "a neuroscience".
