Netspeak is the mix of expressions, technical words, shortcuts, and slang people use on the internet: LOL, BRB, hashtags, and the fast, stripped way people type when they chat. A British language writer, David Crystal, made the word in 2001; he first wrote it Netspeak, with a capital N. The ending -speak here means “the language of a group,” the same trick as in older words like newspeak. Some of netspeak moves into ordinary talk; some of it dates in a few years and already sounds old. It is about how people write and joke online, not about computer code.
