The Netherlands is a country in northwest Europe and a member of the EU. People in English often call it Holland, though that name really belongs to just two provinces; the whole country is the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the city people name as the capital, but the government sits in The Hague. The land is flat, and large parts sit below sea level. Over a long time, people drained water and built dykes — walls against the sea — so there would be more land to live on. A person from there is Dutch, and the language is Dutch, not “Netherlandish” in ordinary speech. Population figures in older books (like 16 million in 2014) go out of date; the country is larger now.
組成From nether (“lower”) + lands. Named because so much of the country is low-lying, with a great part below sea level. Dutch Nederland is built the same way — either a copy of that idea or a parallel name.
