    Neoclassical describes art or buildings that copy the style of ancient Greece or Rome: calm, balanced, with columns, straight lines, and a feeling of order. Painters and architects, especially in the 1700s and early 1800s, looked back to those old models and made a 'new classical' look — that is what neo- is doing here. You will see it on grand museums, banks, and government buildings. Though actually, the same word also turns up for music that goes back to older, clearer forms, and in universities it names a school of economics; but the picture in most learners' books is the art and the architecture. It is a formal, specialist word. Everyday English just says 'in a Greek or Roman style'.

組成neo- (new, from Ancient Greek νέος 'new') + classical (from classic, Latin classicus via French classique, plus -al). Built as neo- + classical.
