Needlepoint is a kind of picture or pattern made with a needle, by covering a stiff cloth with many small stitches until the cloth almost disappears under the thread. It is slower and more “filled in” than ordinary . People do it as a craft, often with the cloth held tight in a frame on their lap. The name is simply needle + point: the point of the needle making the picture stitch by stitch. Though actually, students often fold this into embroidery in general, or mix it up with cross-stitch. Needlepoint is one kind, usually on canvas, with stitches sitting close together. The word can also be used as a verb — to needlepoint a cushion — but the pictures-and-craft sense is the one you will meet first.
