Natal means “to do with birth, or with the time and place someone is born.” It is not a daily-life word on its own. Doctors, midwives, and scientists use it, and you will meet it far more often inside longer words than standing alone: care is care before the baby is born, is after, is about a newborn. A natal village or natal city is simply the place you were born; most people would just say hometown or “the city I was born in.” Natal day for birthday is old-fashioned and a bit literary. The word sounds technical and a little stiff if you drop it into ordinary talk — though actually the idea is simple: born. Do not hear nation inside it and think “of the country.” That is a different word now, even though both go back, far back, to a Latin word for being born. There is also a rare medical natal that has to do with the ; that is not this sense.
