Narcissism is when someone is too in love with themselves — their looks, their talent, their story — and spends too much time looking at that, in a way other people do not like. We use the word to show we . It comes from an old Greek story: a beautiful young man called saw his own face in a pool of water, could not stop looking, and was ruined by that love of himself. Doctors and psychologists also use narcissism as a more careful word for a deep pattern of needing praise and not feeling much for other people. In ordinary English, though, it is often just a sharp way to say you are so vain. It sounds rather formal; in easy chat people might say he is so into himself.
組成From Narcissus (the young man in the Greek story) + -ism (a way of being). English took it from an older German form Narzissismus, later shortened in German to Narzissmus.

A self-centered personality trait in which the person is infatuated with their own characteristics and image that are idealized while others and their differences are devalued in comparison (unless sameness kindles spectacular affinity that forms a rerouting of one's self-love, i.e. the person can see themselves in the other).
