1. 1

To name-check someone or something is to say their name on purpose in a talk, a song, an , or a thank-you — so people notice them. A host name-checks the people who helped. A singer name-checks a city or a brand. It can be a kind nod, or a little hiding in a sentence. You will hear it more from journalists, musicians, and people in business than from a grandmother. It is not checking a passport or a list. The name is being put in, not tested.
