Mycenae was an ancient city in southern Greece, in the hills of the Argolid. In Greek stories, King Agamemnon lived there — the king who led the Greeks to Troy. In real history it was rich and powerful in the Late Bronze Age, before about 1100 BC, and then its great days ended. The walls are huge stone, the kind later Greeks said cyclopes must have built. In the late 1800s the Heinrich Schliemann dug there and found gold and graves; the famous gold “Mask of Agamemnon” came from that work. Though actually, scholars now say that mask is older than the Agamemnon of the stories, if that king ever lived at all. People say the name roughly my-SEE-nee.

組成From Latin Mycenae, from Ancient Greek Μυκῆναι (Mukênai), from Μυκήνη (Mukḗnē), a nymph said to have lived around the place. The modern Greek place-name Mykines is a doublet of the same name. Two old stories try to explain it: Pausanias said Perseus named the city after the cap of his sword-sheath or after a mushroom he picked there (both would go back to Greek μύκης, múkēs); Homer ties the name to the nymph Mycene, daughter of Inachus. Scholars do not all agree, so treat those as stories, not as a settled split of the English word.
