Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia. India and Bangladesh lie to its west, China to its north-east, and Thailand (and ) to its east. In English it used to be called Burma. In 1989 the government said the English name should be Myanmar. Many people around the world still say Burma: some because that is the name they grew up with, some because they do not accept the government that made the change. You will hear both, and people can feel strongly about which one they use. In everyday English, Yangon (older English name: ) is the huge city everyone knows; dictionaries often still call it the capital. Though actually the government moved the capital inland to Naypyidaw. About 55 million people lived there at the 2014 count.
組成Borrowed into British English from Burmese မြန်မာ (mranma), the formal name of the main people. Burma comes from a different Burmese word, ဗမာ (ba.ma), the informal name for the same people. The r at the end of Myanmar (and of Burma) was not originally an r-sound in Burmese; in British English it was a spelling trick to show a longer vowel, like the r in some older British spellings. American speakers often pronounce that r.
