Burma is the older English name for the country in Southeast Asia that is officially called Myanmar. They are not two countries; they are two English names for one place. In 1989 the military government asked the world to say Myanmar. The United Nations and most countries now do. For years Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, the National League for Democracy, kept saying Burma, because they did not accept that the army had the right to change the name. Some news organisations still say Burma; some say Myanmar; some use both. The choice can sound political, even when the speaker only means the place. In Taiwan, Chinese just says 緬甸 either way, so the English fight over names can surprise students. Both English names come from the same Burmese name for the country.
組成Borrowed, first into British English, from Burmese ဗမာ (ba.ma), the everyday form of မြန်မာ (mranma), the same source as Myanmar. The r in Burma was not in the Burmese word and was not originally pronounced; non-rhotic English used -ur- as a way to write the soft vowel in the middle.

On the north it is bordered by Szechuan, and on the east by Kweichau and Kwangsi. It is the third largest province of the Empire, its area measuring 122,000 square miles, but, as elsewhere remarked, owing to the devastatations^([sic – meaning devastations]) of the Mohammedan rebellion and ensuing plague, its population has been greatly reduced, and now is not more than 6,000,000. Yet its mineral wealth is greater and more varied than that of any other province. Its capital is Yunnan, between which town and Burma a considerable trade is carried on.
