A musketeer was a soldier in the past whose main gun was a musket. The English word comes from French mousquetaire in the late 1500s; on the surface it is also musket + -eer (a person linked to something). French musketeers became famous, and later stories turned them into heroes. Though actually, in The Three Musketeers they fight a great deal with swords; the name still means “musket soldier,” not “sword soldier.” Today the word is mostly for history, costume, or that story — it is not a job in a modern army. (A later joke blend with the name Musk is a different, playful use; it is not this sense.)
