    A mural is a picture painted straight onto a wall, inside or outside a building. It is not a canvas you hang up; the wall itself is the surface. Cities have murals on the sides of buildings, and old churches and palaces have them too. Though actually, people sometimes stretch the word to any large wall art, even tiles or a huge printed sheet, but the core meaning is paint on the wall. It is a normal art word — a little more formal than picture, very common in museums and in talk about street art.
