Intramural describes things that happen inside one school, for that school’s own students — not a match against another school. Intramural sports are the games between classes, dorms, or clubs on the same campus. American universities use the word a lot; a student might “play intramurals” after class. Though actually, the pieces mean “inside the walls”: the school as a place with walls around it. Today almost nobody is picturing real walls. The opposite idea is a contest with another school. The word is mainly an adjective, but in US campus talk the plural noun “the intramurals” means those on-campus games.
