A mudslinger is a person who says ugly things about someone — often a political rival — so that other people will think badly of them. The stories are often unfair, stretched, or simply untrue. The picture behind the word is throwing mud to make the other person look dirty. The activity is called mudslinging; the person who does it is a mudslinger. You hear it around elections and public fights. It is not a compliment: if you call someone a mudslinger, you are saying they are fighting dirty with words. Though actually, everyday arguments are not usually called mudslinging — the word belongs to public attacks, not to two friends having a row.
