Ms. here is not the title you put in front of a woman's name. It is a US magazine for women, started in the early 1970s by the feminist writer Gloria Steinem (with Dorothy Pitman Hughes and others). The magazine took the title Ms. as its own name on purpose: it wanted a word for women that did not ask whether they were married. It wrote about pay, bodies, work, and the law in a campaigning voice, and it became a big name in American feminism.
