Mozambique is a country on the east coast of southern Africa, along the Indian Ocean. Tanzania sits to the north and South Africa to the south; inland it also meets other countries, including and Zimbabwe. The capital is . Portuguese is the official language, because Portugal ruled the land for a long time, until independence in 1975. In the 1980s and early 1990s a long civil war killed many people and pushed many others to leave. Older books may say the population was about 24 million in 2014; that is a snapshot from that year, not a forever number — the country has grown since then. English took the name from Portuguese Moçambique, and that name itself comes from a sultan known as Mussa Bin Bique.
