A Mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police — Canada’s famous national police. The nickname comes from mounted, because in the old days they rode horses to cover a huge country. The friendly ending -ie makes it sound like a person you could talk about over tea, not a cold official title. People outside Canada know the : a red jacket, a wide hat, a horse. Though actually, that red coat is mostly for ceremonies now. On a normal day a Mountie looks much more like any other police officer — a dark uniform, a car. Canadians still say Mountie with a mix of respect and warmth. Write it with a capital M: it is a nickname for that one force, not a general word for any police who ride.
