Mothering is the work of caring for children the way a mother does — feeding, holding, fussing, keeping them safe. It can be a noun (her mothering was gentle) or the -ing form of the verb to mother. Though actually, you do not have to be a mother to do it. A father, a grandmother, an older sister, even a friend can be mothering someone. And it is not always praise. Stop mothering me means stop treating me like a child; I can manage. In Britain, Mothering Sunday is an older name tied to Mother’s Day, but the everyday word is the caring, not the holiday.
