1. 1

Motherhood is the state of being a mother — the role, the stretch of life, the whole experience of having and raising a child. We say she is enjoying motherhood, or motherhood changed her. It is a slightly big, slightly formal word; in daily talk someone might just say being a mum. Though actually, people also use it for the idea in general, not only one woman’s life: a book about motherhood is about the job and the feelings that go with it. It is built like childhood and : the ending -hood turns a person-word into a state.
