A mother-to-be is a woman who is going to have a baby. She is pregnant, and people already speak of her as a mother, even though the baby is not born yet. It is a warm, everyday phrase — a little kinder and softer than just saying pregnant woman. You hear it on cards, in baby shops, and in kind conversation. The same pattern makes bride-to-be and husband-to-be: someone who will be that person soon.
