1. 1

A bride-to-be is a woman who is going to marry soon. The wedding is planned, or at least decided; she is not the bride yet, because the day has not come. Magazines, shops, and friends use this name in a warm, everyday way — “a gift for the bride-to-be.” Fiancée is a close word, but it can feel more formal or French; bride-to-be points at the wedding coming. After she marries, she is a bride on the day, then a wife. There is a matching phrase for the man, groom-to-be, though you hear bride-to-be more often.
