A moth is a flying insect, a close cousin of the butterfly. Most moths come out at night and fly toward lights — you have seen them bumping against a lamp or a window. Butterflies often rest with their wings pressed up; moths more often rest with their wings open and flat, or folded like a little tent. Some kinds, clothes moths, lay eggs in wool, silk, or fur, and the young chew holes in jumpers and coats. Though actually, most moths do not eat clothes at all. Many adults drink nectar, and some do not eat. People just remember the ones that ruin a favourite sweater. English also has the picture like a moth to a flame: someone who cannot stay away from a thing, even when it will hurt them. It is an ordinary word, not slang and not fancy.

組成It does not split. From Old English moþþe, from a Germanic word for a moth or a worm (Proto-Germanic *muþþô / *muttô), and further back a very old word for a worm. Dutch mot and German Motte are cousins of the same insect-word.
