A mote is a very tiny bit of dust — so small you might only see it when sun shines through a window. The word is a little old-fashioned or . In everyday talk most people say a of dust, not a mote. You still meet it in the old saying about a mote in someone’s eye: noticing a tiny fault in another person while missing a big one in yourself.
