Morphia is an older name for morphine, the strong pain medicine. Doctors and writers used it freely in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. In Victorian novels, hospital notes, and old newspapers, a patient is “given morphia,” not morphine. It is the same drug, not a milder cousin and not a different chemical. Today a nurse would say morphine; morphia sounds dated, British-old, and a little bookish. You may still hear it from older people, or see it in period drama. Though actually, it was never a street word for a different drug. If a text says morphia, read it as morphine.
