Mormonism is not a person. A Mormon is a member; Mormonism is the faith, the church life, and the wider movement around them. The main church began in 1830 in the United States and is officially called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. People still say “the Mormon Church,” though actually the church now asks to use that long official name, and many members prefer Latter-day Saint to Mormon. The name comes from the Book of Mormon, a scripture they read beside the Bible. In loose talk, Mormonism can also cover smaller related churches, not only the big one. It is a proper name for a religion, so we capitalise it.
組成Mormon (the people / from the Book of Mormon) + -ism (a system of belief). -ism came into English through Greek.
