A Mormon is a member of a religious organization formed in 1830 in the United States, officially called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The everyday name comes from the Book of Mormon, a scripture of the church, named after a prophet in that book (the father of Moroni) and/or the Waters of Mormon mentioned in it. Followers have been called Mormons since the 1830s. In ordinary English people still say Mormon; the church itself now asks to be called by its full name, or Latter-day Saints. The word can be a noun (a Mormon) or an adjective (Mormon history). It names a real community. Other origin stories for the name are mostly guesses, often written to attack or defend the faith.
