If someone is moonstruck, they are a little out of their head — dreamy, silly, not thinking straight — most often because they are in love. Old stories blamed the moon for making people mad; that same idea lives in the older, heavier word lunatic. Moonstruck is old-fashioned and a little literary. You hear it in songs, films, and jokes more than in ordinary talk. A well-known film is even called Moonstruck. It is not a doctor's word. Though actually, people now reach for the love meaning more than the dark 'mad' meaning: wildly in love, not dangerous.

組成moon + struck (hit). The idea is that the moon has 'hit' your mind. The English poet John Milton may have been the first to write it this way.
