A Moonie is a person who belongs to the church started by the Korean businessman Sun Myung Moon. The group's own name is the Unification Church. Outsiders, especially in the United States and Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, began calling members Moonies — a nickname from Moon plus a small, ending. It is informal. Many members dislike it: it can sound teasing or , as if they are all the same and a bit strange. Newspapers used it a lot when the group was in the news. Careful writing usually says a member of the Unification Church instead. Though actually, a lot of younger people today will not know the word unless they meet it in older stories. It is not a person who loves the moon.
