A moonbeam is a shining line of light that seems to come down from the moon — a ray, like a , but at night. Moonlight is the general silver light on everything; a moonbeam is one distinct streak, the kind you notice through a window or between trees. The word is simply moon plus beam. Beam here means a line of light (a torch beam, a ). Though actually, beam is an old English word that first meant a tree, and only later a ray of light — the same split you can still feel in a wooden beam versus a beam of light. Moonbeam is a little poetic; everyday talk more often just says moonlight.
