1. 1

Montreal is a large city and port in southern Quebec, in eastern Canada. It sits on Montreal Island in the St. Lawrence River. French is the main language of daily life there — street signs, schools, shops — because Quebec is a French-speaking place. Though actually you will hear plenty of English too, and many people use both; it is not a city where English disappears. English speakers usually stress the last part (mon-tree-AWL); in French it is Montréal, with a different rhythm. The island, the city, and the name of the hill beside it all sit close together in the story of the name.

組成From French Montréal, from Mont Royal (“Mount Royal”): mont + royal, after the nearby hill, named by Jacques Cartier. It is uncertain how Royal became -real. A common explanation is that real is the Middle French form of royal, but Cartier himself wrote le mont Royal. It may perhaps have come from G.B. Ramusio’s 1556 map, which put the name into Italian as Monte Real.
