Monsignor is a title you use when you speak to or about a priest of high rank in the Roman Catholic Church. It is an honour, not the everyday word Father, which you might use for any parish priest. It does not by itself mean the man is a bishop; it marks a priest the Church has raised in standing. In writing you may see Mgr or Msgr. The word came into English from Italian. It is a cousin of French monsieur — both grew from a 'my lord' form of address — but you use them in different worlds: monsieur for a French man in ordinary life, monsignor only in this church setting. It feels formal and respectful.
