    If something is monotonous, it is boring because it is always the same. The word grew out of “one tone”, but we now use it far beyond voices: a monotonous job, a monotonous road, a monotonous lesson. It is a complaining word. You would not call a happy, quiet day monotonous unless you meant it felt stuck. Close to boring, but the special flavour is “nothing ever changes”, not only “I dislike it”.
