Moneylending is the business of giving people money now and making them pay it back later, with extra money on top. That extra is interest. A bank lends money too, but we do not usually call a bank's work moneylending. People save this word for private lenders — the shop, the person, the unofficial loan — and especially for lenders who make you pay back a lot more than you borrowed. Though actually, the word names the trade, not the person: the person is a moneylender. In stories and in angry talk it can sound old, hard, even dark, because cruel lenders sit behind it. In a law or history book it can be cooler and just mean lending money as a business. Informal to slightly heavy, not a kind everyday word for 'borrowing from the bank.'
