Monetary means “about money,” but not the coins in your pocket in a casual way. It is the formal word for money as a system: a country’s money, its currency, the amount of money moving around, and the rules that try to steer that. You hear it most in monetary policy — what a central bank does with interest rates and the money supply to keep prices steady and the economy from overheating or freezing. A monetary union is when countries share one money (the euro is the famous case). Monetary value is the price of something in money, as opposed to what it is worth to you in other ways. It feels official and news-like; you would not say “I have no monetary” when you mean “I have no money.” Though actually, people stretch it a little: “monetary reward” just means getting paid, as opposed to a prize or a thank-you. Still, the heart of the word is the money of a country, not your wallet.

The Romans kept their chief mint at the Temple of Juno Moneta for centuries, and the name stuck. It is a doublet of minter — two English words that grew from that same older word.
