1. 1

Mommy is what young children in American English call their mother, and what adults say when they speak to or about a small child (“Where’s mommy?”). It is soft, home, and young — a cuddle-word, not a formal one. Grown people talking to other grown people usually say mom or mother. British children more often say mummy or mum. In a school essay or a formal letter, mother is the safe word. You may also hear mommy as a verb in very informal American talk (to mommy a child), but the everyday use is the noun.
