    In old American crime talk, a moll is a criminal’s girlfriend, especially a gangster’s. You will hear gun moll in old films and in newspapers from the 1920s and 1930s: the woman beside the man with the gun. It is not a kind word. It treats her as part of his world, not as a person with her own name. People do not say this in ordinary life now; it sounds like a period story, or like someone quoting a film. Younger speakers almost never use it except as a joke. It comes from Moll, an old pet name for Mary — the same nickname that also gives Molly. Though actually, that name-path and the crime meaning are not how anyone names a friend today. This is not mall (a shopping centre), not mole, and not the German music word moll for a minor key, which only looks the same.
