Belgium is a small country in northwest Europe, tucked between France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. The capital is Brussels. About eleven million people live there. On a map it looks modest, but it sits in a busy corner of the continent, and a great deal of European Union work happens in Brussels — so English speakers sometimes say Brussels when they really mean EU offices, EU rules, and EU politics, not only the city. Belgium has three official languages: Dutch in the north (people often say Flemish for that everyday speech), French in the south, and a little German in the east. Brussels sits in the middle and uses both Dutch and French. That split is not a textbook curiosity; it shapes parties, schools, and how people talk about belonging. Outsiders reach first for chocolate, waffles, and beer, and those things are real and loved — though actually, inside the country the living fact is often the north–south tension, not the sweet shop. English uses Belgium for the country and Belgian for the people and for things from there.
