This name belongs to a small country in Eastern Europe, sitting between Romania and Ukraine. English almost always calls the country Moldova, and it almost always calls the people and the describing word Moldovan. Moldavan is a rarer form of that same name — you may meet it for the people, or in older writing. The capital is Chișinău (often written Chisinau without the marks). Until 1991 the land was one of the republics inside the Soviet Union. Most people there speak Romanian, though the politics around what to call that language have been messy. There is also a strip of land on the east side of the Dniester river, Transnistria, that broke away and is not treated as a separate country by most of the world.
