A moggy is a cat — in informal British English, the ordinary house cat on the kitchen chair, not a fancy show cat with a long family list. People say it with warmth: mixed parents, a bit , still loved. You will also see the spelling moggie. Americans almost never use it; they just say cat. It is friendly, not rude. Though actually the name has a slightly messy past: it was probably Mog plus a little -y, and Mog is a or northern form of Maggie, a pet name for a girl. Cockney speakers in London then used it for mixed-breed cats, so that “just a cat” feeling is old. In a completely different life, in rural South Africa and Zimbabwe, moggy has also been used as an adjective from Unimog, a tough farm truck. There it means rugged and go-anywhere, not a cat. Same spelling, different world.

組成Probably Mog + -y. Mog is a Scots or Northern English variant of maggie (“girl”), from Maggie, a pet form of Margaret and Margery. First attested of mixed-breed cats in Cockney. The southern African adjective is a different word, from the truck brand Unimog.
