1. 1

Maggie is a short, friendly form of the woman’s name Margaret. Families use it at home; it feels warm, not formal. In Britain, newspapers also used Maggie for Margaret when she was prime minister (1979–1990). In that use it was not always kind — papers could say Maggie the way you say a famous person’s first name, sometimes with love, sometimes with a sting. Though actually, Maggie is still just an ordinary name. Most Maggies you meet are not politicians. Other short forms of Margaret include Meg and, in older English, Peggy.
