When something is modernistic, it is designed to look very new, and very unlike older styles: sharp lines, glass, steel, bold shapes. People use it of buildings, furniture, art, and sometimes clothes. Though actually, it is not a perfect twin of modern or modernist. Modern just means “of now” (this year’s phone is modern). Modernist often points to a serious 20th-century art and building movement. Modernistic is more about the look of being new — and in some mouths it is not quite a compliment, as if the design is showing off how modern it is. The word itself can feel a little old: a shop long ago might have sold “modernistic” lamps; a shop today would more often say modern, contemporary, or modernist.
