Modern-day means “of now,” “in our time” — but people almost always use it when they hold the present up against the past. A modern-day pirate, a modern-day love story: the old thing is in the room, and this is the living version. It is an adjective, usually right before a noun. You will see it in news, magazines, and everyday talk. It is not a fancy word, but it is a comparing word. Though actually, it does not mean “fashionable” or “up to date.” A modern-day problem can be an ugly one. It only marks the time as the present. Everyday modern can just mean new. Modern-day points at the age we live in, as a chapter after an older one. The is part of the usual spelling when it sits in front of a noun.
