A mixtape is a piece of music made by mixing things that have already been recorded — songs, voices, beats, instruments — into one new whole. The name is mix + tape, because people first put that mix onto a cassette and passed it around, especially in hip-hop. A DJ might blend tracks; a rapper might add new verses over old beats; a friend might record a string of loved songs as a gift. Though actually, today there is often no tape at all. People still say mixtape for a digital project that is not quite a normal album: looser, more experimental, or given out without a big official release. A playlist is usually whole songs left as they are; a mixtape implies someone did some mixing, or at least made an informal collection with that homemade feeling.
